Charles' main NHS interests lie in breast reconstruction following cancer surgery or congenital deformities, head and neck surgery , and perineal reconstruction as well as skin cancer management. His philosophy is that not only can techniques involved in the reconstructive aspects of plastic surgery be translated to cosmetic practice, but also that it is essential that the operating surgeon have exquisite knowledge of both reconstructive and cosmetic surgical principles in order to achieve the best outcomes in terms of both form and function.

Charles has a specific interest in the ethical issues surrounding plastic surgery and used both reconstructive and aesthetic surgery as the central point to his Masters thesis in Medical Ethics , for which he was awarded a Merit. He believes that although Plastic Surgery rarely provides an opportunity for life-saving surgery , the opportunities for quality-of-life-saving surgery make it the most satisfying specialty there is.

Charles has appeared on Ch 4's Supersize vs. Superskinny and on Ch 4's Embarrassing Bodies . He lives on the South Coast, and is married with 3 children.
